You might not know this but the British Broadcasting Corporation – BBC – has an interesting department. The post – BBC Head of Religion and Ethics – has seen Professor Aaqil Ahmed as the first Muslim to be appointed to the role in the BBC’s 87-year history. Understandably, when Mr Aaqil was appointed to the post in 2009, complaints poured in about him not being a Christian.
Last year, Professor Aaqil courted controversial when he wrote that the Biblical flight from King Herod to Bethlehem was similar to that of refugees massing at Calais in a bid to get through the Channel Tunnel. Now, he says people should admit the “uncomfortable” truth that Islamic State (IS, ISIS, Daesh) is made up of Muslims and their doctrine is Islamic.
Speaking at Huddersfield University, Professor Aaqil Ahmed said – “I hear so many people say ISIS has nothing to do with Islam – of course it has. They are not preaching Judaism. It might be wrong but what they are saying is an ideology based on some form of Islamic doctrine. They are Muslims. That is a fact and we have to get our head around some very uncomfortable things.”
Professor Aaqil joined the BBC from Channel 4 and commissioned the award winning documentaries “Inside The Mind Of A Suicide Bomber” and “The Qur’an”. The BBC has come under sustained criticism for its usage of “so-called Islamic State”. Prime Minister David Cameron has been calling BBC not to use the phrase when referring to the terror group.
Critics have warned that referring to “Islamic State” legitimises the group’s attempt to carve out parts of Iraq and Syria. The extremists are variously known as Islamic State (IA), Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Daesh, based the Arabic acronym for the group.
Call a spade a spade. The truth hurts but it’s extremely hard to say ISIS has nothing to do with Islam. Had this statement came from a non-Muslim, all hell will break loose. But coming from the horse’s mouth, it speaks volumes about the direct link between ISIS terrorism and Islam. And if you think Professor Aaqil Ahmed has been bought over, think again.
Last month, a report compiled by Mr Aaqil suggested that the BBC was too Christian in its output, and should consider scrapping some of its long-running programmes in favour of shows for Muslim, Hindu and Sikh audiences. Muslim critics of the corporation have previously suggested that Friday prayers should be televised.
