You live by the sword, you die by the sword. In the case of Yahya Sinwar, his final weapon was a piece of stick – not a sword or a gun – which he used desperately to defend himself by throwing it at a mini drone hovering nearby. With his right arm severely wounded, he must be in excruciating pain, counting his last breath as he lay dying in the ruins of a building in southern Gaza.

Slumped in a chair covered in dust and debris, the drone – filming him – must be annoying to the motionless Sinwar. He might have hoped to hit the jackpot when he tried to crash the enemy drone, aimlessly and with his last ounce of energy threw the stick with his left hand. The stick missed, and it was game over. The best part was the Israeli troops had no idea that he was Sinwar as he had his head and face covered with a scarf.

Unlike other terrorist leaders honoured to be killed or assassinated in special operations carried out by Israeli elite commandos, Mr Sinwar died because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was found by infantry soldiers from the 828th Bislach Brigade, a unit that normally trains future unit commanders. They were patrolling Tal al-Sultan, an area of Rafah, on Wednesday.

There were reports – not intelligence – that senior members of Hamas could be in that area. It was a lucky day for Israel troops when they saw three suspected militants moving between buildings and opened fire, leading to a gunfight during which 61-year-old Sinwar escaped into a ruined building. The Israeli soldiers fired a tank shell and a mini drone was deployed to scout the building, as the Israeli military would normally do.

Even then, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) didn’t realize they had located Sinwar. The battalion commander then called for the tank to fire again per standard operating procedure, targeting the building structure, causing it to collapse and kill him. The corpse of the suspect (Sinwar) who had futilely attempted to knock down the drone with a stick was left at the site due to suspected booby traps.

It was only the next morning (Thursday, Oct 17) when the soldiers returned to the scene to sift through the rubble that one of the bodies was found to bear a striking resemblance to the leader of Hamas – including distinctive moles near his eyes and crooked teeth. Found half-buried beneath debris, he was wearing a bullet-protection vest, with two catastrophic head wounds and a leg injury.

Also found was 40,000 shekels (US$10,731.63) in cash, grenades and a Palestinian passport belonging to someone else, along with a pack of Mentos. Photos of teeth, DNA samples and fingerprints were taken from the body. They matched the fingerprints and DNA records from Israel’s prison system and the Israeli Health Ministry, which provided health services to him when he was in detention.

When Israel first announced it was “investigating the possibility” that Sinwar had been killed in Gaza on Thursday afternoon local time, they already had the confirmation that he was the Hamas leader. The Jews state is not known to issue such statement if it does not have a certain degree of confidence and certainty. Still, the burning question is why the heck Sinwar was loitering in the area instead of hiding in the tunnels?

Here’s the joke – Sinwar, incredibly starving, had left the tunnel scavenging for food after hearing that Israel had allowed relief supplies to reach that area. However, it was an Israeli’s bait, and he foolishly swallowed the hook, line and sinker. He was lured like a rat to meet his 72 goats. He made a mistake, but this fatal mistake was the only one mistake Israel needed to nail his balls to the wall.

In truth, the IDF had no idea who he was due to the assumption that Sinwar had spent much of his time hiding in the tunnels under the Strip, along with a battalion of bodyguards and a “human shield” of hostages seized from Israel. Besides, he was always one step ahead, earning him the nickname “The Cat with Nine Lives”. When he bumped into the Israeli patrol, his guard detail was small and there were no hostages at all.

At one point, soldiers arrived in an underground compound just moments after Sinwar had fled, leaving behind a cup of coffee that was still hot. There were also reports that he lives underground in the Gaza Strip and moves around crowded streets wearing women’s clothes as part of disguise tactic to blend in with crowds to avoid being spotted by Israeli drones.

Either the terrorist chief can no longer hide in one of the vast network of tunnels that Hamas dug beneath Gaza over the past two decades as more and more have been uncovered and destroyed by Israeli troop, forcing him to emerge in broad daylight, or most of his guards have been killed or abandoned him. Unable to use telephones and other communication equipment, he was sent back to the Stone Age.

He could be trying to flee as Israeli forces had narrowed his rough location in the southern city of Rafah. Sinwar was also increasingly isolated after the demise of almost all his comrades. In late July, Israel killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. In August, thousands of Hezbollah members were seriously wounded after the infamous pagers and walkie-talkies explosion.

Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the Oct 7 terror attack that massacred 1,200 Jews party goers, including raping and kidnapping, was clearly under tremendous pressure – even panicked – to save himself after the elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in September, and Nasrallah’s replacement, and the replacement of Nasrallah’s replacement, effectively crippling the entire terror network.

U.S. President Joe Biden, who has been calling for a ceasefire and even threatened to cut arms shipments to Israel unless Gaza aid starts flowing, shamelessly took some of the credit, as did Kamala Harris, announcing that “justice has been served”. Harris said – “This moment gives us an opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza.” However, without the return of the remaining hostages, it’s hard to imagine any deal could be made.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said to the nation – “Hamas will no longer rule Gaza. This is the beginning of the day after Hamas. This is an opportunity for you, the residents of Gaza, to finally break free from its tyranny. Your leaders are fleeing and they will be eliminated. Those who lay down their ‘weapon and return our hostages’ would be allowed to ‘leave and live’“.

However, Netanyahu also warned – “Whoever harms our hostages – their blood on his head. We will settle accounts with him.” Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has similarly called for an increase in “intense military pressure” on Gaza while also “offering safe passage and a financial reward to those who return our hostages to us and ask to lay down their arms and leave the Strip.”

Like it or not, with both Hamas and Hezbollah severely decimated, it demonstrates the intelligence superiority and military prowess of the Israeli forces, especially Mossad and Shin Bet. More importantly, it sends a chilling message that the Jews state is not to be messed with. When they promise to hunt you down, they will make good on their promise.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Declares War on Hamas

As far back as last November, War cabinet minister Benny Gantz already announced that Israel will hunt down Hamas leaders “in Gaza and around the world.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had declared – “Every Hamas member is a dead man.” Israel had given enough warnings. But both Haniyeh and Sinwar made mistakes, and were taken out.

In reality, when Israel started shifting its military focus to Lebanon from Gaza, it was the clearest sign that most of the tunnels had been destroyed and it was a matter of time before the Hamas mastermind had to emerge from the underground. With Yahya Sinwar’s death, it remains to be seen if his brother Mohammed Sinwar, who recently took over as Hamas’ military commander, will dare to replace him.
